According to a recent article from Medical News Today, studies have shown a correlation between high school sports participation and fitness in people of retirement-age. The study actually was done on 712 World War II veterans. The veterans in the study were found to be more active upon reaching an average age of 78 if they’d participated in high school or college-level sports before entering the war, with the strongest predictor of fitness at retirement age being found in those who participated in a varsity sport in high school. Those former varsity athletes also self-reported fewer trips to the doctor in their advanced age, the report stated.
According to the study’s co-author, Dr. Simone Dohle of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, the results offer a compelling reason to not only make maintaining quality high school-level sports programs a high priority, but also enhancing those programs.
