East meets West in Russian All Stars match

Belgorod, Russia, January 30, 2012 – Team West took bragging rights in Russia’s annual All Stars Game in Belgorod on Sunday after they beat rivals Team East in straight sets (30-25, 25-21, 25-20).

Using the same format as last year, with teams formed from either side of the country, Team West took immediate control with coach Gennady Shipulin taking full advantaged of the no limit in substitutions, sending out all his players.

Team West comfortably set the pace through the first set, but some great serving from FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup 2011 MVP Maxim Mikhaylov helped the East cut the gap and eventually draw level at 24-all. But David Lee helped the West take the opener with a block on Denis Biryukov.

Team East had to adjust their reception during the opening of the second set as their opponents dictated the tempo taking a four point lead. Despite the best efforts of Mikhaylov and Pavel Moroz, this lead was maintained as West took a 2-0 lead.

The East finally found their rhythm in the third set, taking the lead in an effort to get the game back on track. But the West had other ideas and they cut the gap to one point before Sergey Tetyukhin shattered the Eastern defence with a magnificent service and Alexander Kosarev followed with an ace.

Pavel Moroz topped scored with 17 points for “Team East”, leading and Jochen Schöps who was on 12. Kosarev and Konstantin Ushakov were named MVPs for Team West and Team East respectively.
