Chilean beach tennis arrives on international stage
The explosive growth of beach tennis following the launch of the ITF Beach Tennis Tour just four years ago has not gone unnoticed in South America. With a coast line and climate seemingly designed for the sport it is no surprise that Chile have announced their first international beach tennis event.
Coquimbo, located 460 Km north of Santiago, will witness the nation’s first ITF Beach Tennis Tour tournament. From the 26th to the 29th January 2012 the sands of the Peñuelas beach will be buzzing with activity as the beach tennis spirit moves in.
Sanctioned by the ITF (International Tennis Federation) and hosted by the Chilean Tennis Federation, Chile’s inaugural international beach tennis tournament will be an ITF Grade 4 event. Men’s and women’s doubles teams will battle it out for ITF Beach Tennis World Ranking points and a share of the 1,500USD prize money.
The organisers of the event, M+E Sports, are no strangers to beach tennis however. In June 2011 they launched the sport in Chile and have been working to develop and promote the game in beach tennis centres in the coastal cities of La Serena and Coquimbo.
The manager of M+E Sports, Alberto Duarte, commented: ‘We are very excited about this new initiative […] and are pleased that our efforts have been rewarded by the Chilean Tennis Federation and the ITF with the opportunity to hold an international Beach Tennis Tour event.’
Not wanting to exclude those in the capital, M+E Sports have also held beach tennis exhibition events in Santiago and Alberto Duarte added: ‘Our challenge is to develop the sport across the whole of Chile and to consolidate the professional tournament as the best on the Pacific coast.’
Spectators are welcome and for more information on visiting or entering this tournament you can view the official fact sheet or visit the Beach Tennis Chile website. For general information on the development of beach tennis in Chile visit the Chilean Tennis Federation website.
