Alison/Emanuel add to honours with Brazil Tour title
Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, November 14, 2011 – Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego clinched the points title of the Brazilian Banco do Brasil Beach Volleyball Tour in Recife on Sunday capping off a memorable season on the 10th stop of the tournament.
The FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Championship winners and World Tour champions Alison and Emanuel needed only a third place finish in Recife to be sure of top spot in the standings. However the tandem surpassed this to win the tournament played at Pina´s Beach by downing Olympian Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran in straight sets 21-16 and 21-12.
“I am really happy for the amazing season we had,” Emanuel said. “Our team was strongly committed in all tournaments. We came back from a tough season on the World Tour and spent a couple of weeks in Mexico to play in the Pan American Games. After all, we were able to keep the focus and play a great tournament in Recife.”
The legendary Olympic champion achieved his eighth national title as he had previously won with Ricardo Santos (2002, 2003, 2006 and 2008), Jose Marco (1994 and 1995) and Tande Ramos (2001). The 25 year-old Alison celebrated his second win, following a maiden title in 2009 with Harley Marques.
“This is definitely the best year of my career,” Alison added. “I can only thank my family and friends, who are ever with me, our coach, Leticia Pessoa, who never gives up on me, and Emanuel, who believed in our project. We had a difficult season in 2010 but we improved a lot with that.”
Veteran Franco Neto, 45, and Fred Doria, 39, finished third as Pedro Salgado could not join partner Rhooney Ferramenta in the bronze medal match due to a left-foot injury.
In the women’s edition, Juliana Felisberta Da Silva and Larissa França made an important step to finishing the season at the top of the standings by winning their sixth tournament with a 21-16 and 21-9 victory over Angela Vieira and Lili Maestrini in the final. The tandem now has 3,720 points against Talita Antunes and Maria Elisa Antonelli’s 3,040 with two more events to be played.
“We had not much trouble in the final match,” Juliana said. “We imposed our rhythm after making some mistakes in the beginning, but we focused and managed to win. It is an important move to the season title, but it is not time to celebrate. Let´s try to assure it next stop and they enjoy it.”
Salgado sisters Maria Clara and Carolina reached the podium by beating Val Leao and Shaylyn Bede 21-18, 17-21 and 15-13 in the third place match.
Joao Pessoa will host the 11th stop of the season, from November 24 and 27, with the season coming to an end in Fortaleza from December 7 to 10.
