Hail to the champs: Congrats to Donoho for wining volleyball state title

Rachel Matson, key member of the Donoho School’s newly crowned state champion volleyball team, put the spotlight on her coach Janice Slay following Thursday’s 1A title victory.

“She’s brought unity and a lot of teamwork to this program,” Matson said of Slay. “Before, we were self-centered and played for ourselves. Now, we play for Donoho, the name on the front of our jerseys and not the one on the back.”

Congratulate Matson, Slay and all the members of the Donoho squad for its grand achievement.

And let’s not forget to salute Alexandria’s volleyball team, which lost to Guntersville in Thursday’s state finals. The Lady Valley Cubs, while stung by the loss, can look back on their season with pride. As Alexandria coach Jordan Costner said following the match, “They worked extremely hard all year, and it paid off.”

Donoho’s Lady Falcons deserve applause for pushing through in spite of often tough odds and challenging circumstances. Addison, Donoho’s opponent in the state finals in Pelham, was an old nemesis. It was Addison that eliminated Donoho from last year’s state tournament. This year was different, and the Lady Falcons have a large trophy to prove it.

In the midst of the celebration, it’s important to credit coach Slay with teaching a deeper lesson to her team, one that these high school students can carry throughout their lives. As Matson, the state tournament MVP, so adroitly put it, Donoho was playing as a cohesive team with one goal, and not merely as a collection of individuals.
