FIU, ASU Post Sweeps on Sunday

FIU Sweeps UALR
MIAMI (Oct. 23, 2011) - Behind another stellar performance by junior Jovana Bjelica, FIU swept Sun Belt Conference foe UALR, 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-23), at the U.S. Century Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Panthers improve to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in SBC play, while the Trojans fall to 9-15 overall and 4-6 in league action.

The first set saw senior Sabrina Gonzalez post a kill to break a 17-17 tie and put FIU on top, 18-17. A Panther service error would then bring up another tie, but a UALR attack error allowed FIU to regain the lead at 19-18. Bjelica came through with a kill and another Trojan attack error gave the Panthers a 21-18 and forced a UALR timeout.

Out of the break, the Trojans recorded a kill to get within two at 21-19 before Bjelica slammed home another score to put the Panthers ahead, 22-19. Bjelica teamed up with freshman Silvia Carli for a block to make it 23-19 and a UALR attack error put FIU in set-point position at 24-19. A final score by Bjelica gave the Panthers a 25-19 set win and a 1-0 lead for the match.

ASU Volleyball Sweeps FAU
BOCA Raton, Fla. (10/23/11) – The Arkansas State women’s volleyball team defeated Florida Atlantic in a 25-17, 25-15, 25-16 sweep on Sunday. A-State senior Cayla Fielder moved into seventh-place on the ASU all-time kill’s with 1,315 for her career.

She finished with 11 kills on night, while Taylor and Jasmine Terry added 12 kills each. Szypulski needed one more kill to tie her career-high of 13 kills in a match. Allison Kearney finished with a career-high .750 attacking percentage, and also added 35 assists on the night.
