Cuba and Brazil to play for Pan Am gold medal

Guadalajara, Mexico, October 19, 2011 – Defending champions Cuba and world No. 1 team Brazil will play for the gold medal at the XVI Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011 in Mexico after coming through their respective semifinals in the women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday in a remake of the 2007 final.

Cuba defeated favourites Brazil at the last edition of the tournament in Rio de Janeiro after out-duelling the home side in five sets.

Dominican Republic and USA will play for the bronze medal.

In Wednesday’s action, Cuba defeated the United States in four sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-27, 25-21) while Brazil saw off Dominican Republic in straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-23).

Cuba v United States
Defending champions Cuba needed four sets to dispose of USA and advance to the gold medal match of the women’s volleyball tournament. Cuba had a five-point margin in blocks at 16-11 while the United States edged the aces with 7-6. Yoana Palacios led Cuba with 25 points as five other teammates also reached double digits in the scoring charts. Kenia Carcaces and Gyselle Silva registered 14 points apiece, while Yanelis Santos, Rosanna Giel and Yusidey Silie each finished with 11 tallies. Cynthia Barboza and Alexandra Klineman finished with 14 and 12 points respectively for the defeated side.

Brazil v Dominican Republic
World No. 1 Brazil advanced to the gold medal match after a simple straight sets victory over Dominican Republic. The Brazilian women last won the gold medal at the quadrennial event in 1999 when in Winnipeg, Canada. The three-time champions will clash with reigning and eight-time champions Cuba in the decisive match on Thursday. Mari Steinbrecher led Brazil with 10 points and Paula Pequeno added eight. Fabiana Claudino and Thaisa Menezes each registered seven points including three blocks. Milagros Cabral and Prisilla Rivera scored 12 and 11 respectively for Dominican Republic and Bethania De la Cruz added nine.

Peru v Canada
Peru overcame Canada in four sets (24-26, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19) in the match for the 5-8 positions. Four Peruvian players finished in double figures in scoring and they were led by Mirtha Uribe and Patricia Soto who registered 15 and 14 points respectively. Carla Rueda and Claivett Yllescas added 13 and 12. Canada’s best scorers were Sherline Holness and Elizabeth Cordonier with 13 apiece and Brittney Page who added 11. Canada held a 13-10 advantage in blocks while Peru had the edge in service aces 4-3.

Puerto Rico v Mexico
Sarai Alvarez and Stephanie Enright each registered 20 points to lead Puerto Rico in a five-set (20-25, 25-14, 9-25, 25-10, 15-9) victory over Mexico on Wednesday night. The victory means Puerto Rico will now meet Peru for fifth place in the women’s volleyball tournament while the hosts meet Canada for seventh. Aury Cruz contributed 11 points for Puerto Rico while Andrea Rangel and Samantha Bricio charted 18 and 11 points for Mexico.
