CEV pre-qualification tournament for Olympic Games outlined

Luxembourg, Luxembourg, October 18, 2011 – A number of tough pools have been drawn in the CEV pre-qualification tournament as the fight for a berth at the London 2012 Olympic Games begins for some of Europe’s leading countries.

The tournament acts as a precursor to the European Qualification Tournament, scheduled for May 2012 in Sofia, Bulgaria and Istanbul, Turkey for men and women respectively, and the eventual winners will move on to London.

After completion of the 2011 European Championship and with the FIVB having assigned the wild cards available for the upcoming FIVB Volleyball World Cup in Japan (due to take place from November 4 to 18 for women and from November 20 to December 4 for men), teams were finally split into groups.

With some countries having advanced to this stage by claiming the elimination round that concluded in September, the Pools were completed by seeding the remaining teams as per their ranking at the final round of the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship.

The winners of the pre-qualification phase will advance to the European Qualification Tournament where one ticket to represent Europe at the Olympics will be at stake.

The women’s pre-qualification tournaments will be running from November 8 to 13 while the men’s edition will be held from November 22 to 27. The formula will see the six teams divided into two groups of three, playing a single round robin, before the first and second ranked play crossed semifinals thereby eventually qualifying for the final game.
