Three teams remain unbeaten at Pan Am Games
Guadalajara, Mexico, October 16, 2011 – Defending champions Cuba and World No 1 Brazil have 2-0 records in Pool A of the Women’s Volleyball Tournament of the Pan American Games after the conclusion of Day two in Guadalajara. United States in Pool B is the other unbeaten side in the eight-team competition.
In Sunday’s action, Cuba defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-16) while Brazil saw off Canada 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-10). In Pool B, United States blanked Peru 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-19) and Puerto Rico won against Mexico 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-13).
Cuba v Dominican Republic
Defending champions Cuba defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-16) for its second victory in Pool A. The Dominicans have a 0-2 record. Kenia Carcaces was the main offensive weapon for Cuba with 19 points while Rosanna Giel and Yoana Palacios each contributed 15 points and Gyselle Silva added 11 including four aces. For Dominican Republic, Bethania De la Cruz had a match-high 23 points. Cuba had a 6-3 advantage in service aces while was edged 9-8 in blocks.
Brazil v Canada
World top-ranked Brazil scored a 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-10) victory over Canada to claim its second win in Pool A. Brazil dominated the game at the net with a 8-3 advantage in blocks and had a 4-0 margin in aces. Brazil is now at 2-0 while Canada fell down to 0-2. Paula Pequeno and Mari Steinbrecher topped Brazil with 13 and 11 points while Sherline Holness was the best Canadian with nine tallies.
United States v Peru
United States claimed its second victory in Pool B by defeating Peru 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-19). Peru dropped to 1-1 mark. The Americans held a 11-2 advantage in the blocking category. Lauren Gibbemeyer led United States with 13 points including four blocks while Angela Forsett contributed 11 points. Cassidy Lichtman and Jessica Jones each had 10 points with Jones registering four blocks. Peru’s had Mirtha Uribe its best scorer with 11 tallies.
Puerto Rico v Mexico
Puerto Rico claimed its first victory in Pool B after defeating hosts Mexico 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-13). The victory leveled Puerto Rico’s record at 1-1 while Mexico dropped to 0-2. Puerto Rico held a 9-4 margin in the blocking battle. Sarai Alvarez was the most outstanding Puerto Rican with 20 points, all but one in attacks. Aury Cruz and Amanda Vásquez contributed 14 and 13 points respectively while Vilmarie Mojica and Stephanie Enright each had three blocks. Mexico’s Andrea Rangel and Karla Sainz finished with 13 and 10 points.
