South Africa men and Mauritius women pick up gold at All Africa Games
Maputo, Mozambique, September 15, 2011 - South African men’s duo Freedom Chiya and Grant Goldschmidt sealed gold at the 2011 All Africa Games beach volleyball tournament on Wednesday while Mauritius’ Natash Rigobert and Elodie Li Youklo clinched the women’s edition as the competition drew to a close at Costa do Sol Arena in the Mozambique capital of Maputo.
Chiva/Goldschmidt flew past Angolan brothers Marcio and Eden Sequeira in straights sets (21-9, 21-17) in the men’s final, but Rigobert/Li Youklo ensured it wouldn’t be a clean sweep for South African as they defeated counterparts Palesa Sekhenyana and Randy Williams 2-0 (21-13, 21-12) to clinch women’s gold.
It was the first time that beach volleyball has featured at the quadrennial event since its establishment in 1965.
In the men’s bronze medal match, Ghana tandem Ajamako Seidu and Evans Tagoe held off Nigeria’s Kayode Ajilore and Goodluck Anyasodnke 2-0 (21-17, 27-25). Kenyan veterans Margaret Indiaka and Dorcas Ndasaba sealed third place in the women’s contest through a controlled 2-0 (21-17, 21-12) victory over Nigeria’s Agera Preiolla and Garba Mariam.
