Hooker heralds sister as inspiration
Lausanne, Switzerland, September 5, 2011 – 2011 FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix MVP USA’s Destinee Hooker has revealed sister Marshevet, who helped USA’s track and field team to gold in the women’s 4x100m relay of the IAAF World Championships over the weekend, was the person who first inspired her to play volleyball.
Speaking to the FIVB Heroes website, this year’s star player cites her older sister used to play a lot when the two were younger and she wanted to be just like her.
“I became a volleyball player from watching my sister since she was in high school,” the 23-year old said. “She was my idol so I wanted to be just like her and that’s what led me to volleyball.”
She also said that the best moment so far in her career was when she played her first World Grand Prix match in the 2010 edition.
“My best day of my career was when [USA coach] Hugh McCutcheon subbed me in against the Dominican Republic in the 2010 World Grand Prix and then finding out the next day when we played Germany that he started me,” Hooker said.
