NORCECA Men's Championship heats up

Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, August 31, 2011 - Defending champions Cuba, Olympic champions United States, Canada and hosts Puerto Rico remained unbeaten with a 2-0 win-loss record as the second day of action at the Men’s NORCECA Championship in Mayagüez continued on Tuesday.

The eventual champions will earn a berth to the 2011 FIVB Men's World Cup in Japan from November 20 to December 4, with the top three teams from that tournament moving onto the London 2012 Olympic Games.

In Pool B, Cuba and USA defeated Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica respectively, while in Pool A, Canada beat St. Lucia while Puerto Rico saw off Mexico despite early difficulties. The first two semifinalists will be defined on Wednesday as pool play ends.

Canada v St. Lucia
Canada picked up another win in Pool A as they prevailed 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-13) over St. Lucia, with solid blocks and attacks. St. Lucia gave Canada a shock as they kept up with their North American rivals up to 11-11 before they were seen off. However the second and third sets saw a much more offensive Canada, forcing St. Lucia to be less consistent. Canada now has a 2-0 win-loss record. Gavin Schmitt topped the scores with with 14 points as Justin Duff scored 11. St. Lucia were led by Jason Octave and Julian Bisstte with eight apiece.

Cuba v Trinidad and Tobago
Cuba scored its second victory in Pool B with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-13) win over Trinidad & Tobago taking control from beginning to the end, allowing all its players a chance to step in, while Trinidad & Tobago seemed out of rhythm. Fernando Hernandez was Cuba’s top scorer with 17 points, while Marc Honore scored eight for Trinidad & Tobago.

USA v Costa Rica
United States kept their record intact with a straight sets (25-16, 25-12, 25-9) win over Costa Rica. The side now move onto the final day of pool play looking to take top spot from Cuba.

Evan Patak scored 12 points and Ryan Millar 10 for the Americans. Richard Smith of Costa Rica was the best scorer for his side with seven points.

Puerto Rico v Mexico
Puerto Rico put on a great performance and picked up an important 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-17) win over Mexico in Tuesday’s final match. High expectations were set for this match with a dramatic first set that took Puerto Rico to the edge as the score was tied up to 25-25. However Puerto Rico took control in the second and third, finding the rhythm to take them to victory. The hosts now take on Canada for top spot in Pool B. However for Mexico, the loss was a bitter one and puts them in a tough spot with 0-2 win-loss record. With 12 points, 11 and 10, Enrique Escalante, Jose Rivera and Juan Figueroa took Puerto Rico to the victory; and for Mexico, Gerardo Contreras topped with 18 points.
