November 20 – December 4

USA opened the tournament by sweeping Trinidad and Tobago in straight sets (25-15, 25-7, 25-12) in Pool B. However the American’s will be sweating over Clayton Stanley’s early departure in the first set as he left the court injured. Stanley’s replacement, Evan Patak, and David Lee topped the scores for the victors with 12 points apiece while Trinidad and Tobago captain Nolan Tash scored nine for his side.

However USA player Kevin Hansen said that despite the win, the team are hoping they will be able to welcome back Stanley into the fray.

“First of all, I feel disappointed for Clay’s injury, I wish he can make it back,” he said. “We didn’t know what to expect of Trinidad, they played very well at the beginning. Our serving was more disciplined and we hope to continue to improve in all areas.”

Cuba then stepped onto the court as they defeated Costa Rica in straight sets (25-16, 25-13, 25-15) to successfully begin their title defence. Cuba captain Wilfredo Leon led his side with 12 points and he was closely followed by Fernando Hernandez with nine.

However Leon was eager not to dwell on the win and look forward to the rest of the tournament, making Cuba’s intentions clear.

“I believe my team did well, it was good match and it helps us in our preparation for the rest of the championship, as we are looking to be in first place,” he said.

Canada, fresh from qualifying for the 2012 FIVB Volleyball World League for the first time since 2007, managed to hold off their Central American rivals Mexico to seal a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 27-25, 25-22) in Pool A’s first match.

Frederic Winters contributed 20 points for the North American side and he was matched by Mexico’s Gerardo Contreras.

Despite the win, Canada coach Glenn Hoag was quick to point out errors in his side’s game which he feels will need to be eradicated ahead of their next match.

“We need more stability in winning points, obviously I’m happy and I want to congratulate Mexico who we respect because they play with the heart.”

Hosts Puerto Rico gave the home fans something to shout about in the final match of the day as they saw off St. Lucia in easy straight sets (25-11, 25-17, 25-11).

“This is an important experience for St. Lucia, we were cautions because we didn’t know what to expect and always the first match in a tournament is difficult” said Puerto Rico’s Argentinean coach Carlos Cardona.
