China move to top spot in girls' youth and women's junior ranking

Lausanne, Switzerland, August 24, 2011 – China haS rocketed 12 places up to top spot in the women’s junior and girls’ youth FIVB World Rankings after the sport’s governing body released the latest tables on Thursday.

A silver medal at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Girls’ Youth World Championship in Turkey and a bronze medal at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Junior World Championship in Peru see the Asian side move above Brazil and USA to cap a phenomenal year off for the two young sides. Italy were also big winners in the top ten, moving up eight spots to fourth while Turkey close out the first five positions as the only side to maintain their place in the top 20.

Meanwhile Poland powered their way up 20 places to ninth as Slovakia also saw themselves improve, climbing 14 spots to 14th. Peru and Japan will be lamenting the cost of their performance after dropping four places each to take seventh and eighth.

Russia will be celebrating however as they moved from 43rd to 27th, a move of 16 places.

The new table has a number of drastic changes across the board with only eight out of 79 teams having maintained their place, with the rest having moved up or down in the ranking.
