COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 13, 2011) – The U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball team proved once again to be too strong for Canada as it defeated its North American neighbor, 25-13, 25-3, 25-16 and, in a bonus fourth set, 25-10 on Saturday at the Wellness Center at the University of Central Oklahoma.
The match wraps up Canada’s week of training with the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball resident athlete program at the University of Central Oklahoma, and with the National Team over the weekend. The U.S. will finish its weekend training camp with a training session Sunday morning.
Canada utilized the knowledge and experience of the United States to further prepare itself for the upcoming Parapan American Zonal Championships at the end of September in Brazil.
For the U.S., which has already qualified for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, the joint training and friendly matches provided the team with the opportunity to provide its younger players with valuable match experience.
On Saturday, Allison Aldrich (Schuyler, Neb.) led the United States with 16 points on six kills, six aces, and four blocks. Heather Erickson (Fayetteville, N.C./UCO resident athlete) added 11 points on eight aces and three kills, while Brenda Maymon (Sellersburg, Ind.)contributed with seven points on four kills and three aces.
U.S. Head Coach Bill Hamiter (Bethany, Okla.) was once again pleased with the team’s overall performance.
“Our ladies used a well-balanced approached to this match, with our entire roster contributing in one way or another,” he said.
“Our younger players were able to get some crucial playing time and experience in our system of play, and getting them up to level of our veterans will certainly help us as we prepare for London. Canada has improved significantly since we last faced them, and it is always good for us to face other teams and the different styles of play that they use.”
Next up for the U.S. Women’s team is the Continental Cup in the Ukraine in the first week of September, followed by the Parapan American Zonal Championships in Brazil during the last week of September.
