Salute to the Legendary Stars of Volleyball

It all starts with the serve. And more and more, in beach volleyball it ends with the serve. The Jump Serve has undeniably revolutionized the sport-particularly at the top level of play. Tough jump servers like Brian Lewis, Scott Ayakatubby, Jose Loiola, Adams Johnson can single handley take over a game.

In 1996 at a tournament in Phoenix, Kent Steffes and I lost the finals 15-10 to Johnson and Loiola. They had 11 aces! That means they only had to earn four points the whole game. Enough said.

The serve is the only part of the game you control totally, because you initiate the play. For many years players didn't take full advantage of that fact. Possibly they were just having too much fun in those days of yore, when winning players took home a trophy, at best after toiling for two straight 10 hours days under a broiling sun.
