The ULM volleyball team will play its first sand volleyball match Saturday as part of Super Warhawk Weekend.
Head coach Earnest Vasquez introduced the idea of playing both indoor and outdoor seasons during his interview process more than a year ago. ULM broke ground on the courts this past summer and will host Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls State on Friday in a Pro Beach volleyball style tournament. The Warhawk Sand Classic will begin at 9 a.m. on the new courts located behind the tennis stadium. "We're real excited just because we're interested in bringing a different look to volleyball around the area," Vasquez said. "We want to expose people to watching it in a more casual atmosphere." All 12 members of the ULM volleyball team will be participating in a doubles format, with the tournament expected to last until 3:30 p.m. Ukraine native Tetiana Sukach will return to a comfortable setting with the sand courts. The sophomore participated in the Youth World Beach Tour in Europe. She will pair up with Long Beach native Lacey Dietlin. The event is open to the public, and admission is free.
